LINK and CERN Description
LINK is an internship program at Animas High School where juniors are allowed a month off of classes in order to pursue an internship of their choice. I interned with the University of Washington's ATLAS team at CERN. CERN, the world's premier particle physics laboratory, is located on the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva. The research at CERN is mainly concerned with learning the language of the universe via mathematics and pushing the boundaries of human knowledge for no other reason than to learn more.
My experience at CERN was amazing and I learned a huge amount. In my work there I found coding and comp sci skills incredibly important; I was coding for about 13 hours a day. During this process I learned how to built Monte Carlo simulations, how particle detectors like ATLAS work, and many other new physics concepts and ways of thinking. All of these skills will prove extremely useful in my career and life in general. I believe that my internship will fundamentally alter the course of my life going forward by giving me skills and connections that I need to succeed in the future. My dream is to work at CERN in the future and having contacts at CERN will help with this goal.
